And Still We Rise

1865: Freedom for many African Americans arrived when President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. President Lincoln declared that slaves in Confederate states were free, but word did not spread to distant states immediately. Nearly two years later, on June 19 (Juneteenth), 1865, Union General Gordon Granger’s announcement of emancipation in Galveston, Texas, prompts widespread rejoicing, which is remembered today with annual celebrations of Juneteenth Independence. In December 1865, the 13th Amendment is adopted to free the remaining slaves in all states.
