Josiah Wedgwood was a trendsetter, humanitarian, entrepreneur, and an early marketing expert who brought ceramics production into the 18th-century industrial age.

Known for their successful production of different goods, Josiah Wedgwood & Sons hired painters to decorate their earthenware and porcelain. The scene painted around this vase depicts a stork standing on a turtle’s back, being led by a rather large fly. A slithering green lizard appears to have escaped the two-dimensional depiction and perches around and atop the vase. You’ll find this vase in the Cabinet of Curiosities in the exhibition Empire of Things.
