Archive Label 2003: Venetian glass came of age during the fifteenth century when glass workers rediscovered the ancient process of decolorizing glass with manganese. The result was cristallo, called so due to its resemblance to rock crystal. Also revived from Roman techniques was the embedding of cristallo with thin rods of milky white glass called lattimo. This procedure involved lining a mold with evenly spaced rods of lattimo and blowing cristallo into the mold to cover the rods. The piece was finished by twisting and blowing the glass, which resulted in a spiral (latticino) pattern that contrasts with the transparency of the main body
