Civic Leader and Art Collector: Sallie Casey Thayer and an Art Museum for KU

Utagawa Hiroshige was well-known by Western artists, collectors, and curators by the time Sallie Casey Thayer began collecting. Attracted to the viewpoints, colors, subject matter, and use of line used within Japanese woodblock prints, European and American artists collected them to admire and use as source material. Hiroshige’s work held major influence for artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Collectors such as Thayer likely sought out these prints as important examples of Japanese print production and for their connections with modern European and American art.
