Exhibition Label: "Time/Frame," Jun-2008, Robert Fucci, Shuyun Ho, Lauren Kernes, Lara Kuykendall, Ellen C. Raimond, and Stephanie Teasley Two loaded ox carts are driven through the mountain path covered in deep snow. Despite the tranquil setting, as indicated by the title, the party is transporting grain, a theme often associated with the wartime need for food at the frontlines. In 1938, a year after full-scale war between Japan and China had erupted, North China, where the artist was working, was already under Japanese occupation. The artist may have consciously coded this traditional theme as a response to contemporary events.
