Archive Label 1999: This is a preliminary sketch for a larger painting of the same title still in the collection of the artist’s family. While Cropsey is better known for his autumnal landscapes, he also painted imaginary subjects. This picture may have been inspired by a visit Cropsey made in 1847 to Abbotsford, the home of writer Sir Walter Scott.
