A mythicized version of the First Crusade by Torquato Tasso tells of Christian crusader Rinaldo falling in love with Armida because of her sorceress spells. When Rinaldo is shown a mirror of diamonds the spell is broken and he returns to war, leaving Armida heartbroken and suicidal. Many artists have created works about this dramatic tale.
