Archive Label 2003: Birger Sandzén left his native Sweden in 1894 to accept a teaching position at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he eventually became chairman of the art department. In Sentinel Pines Sandzén defined the landscape image by means of a nail point hammered into the face of his woodblock, a technique he often employed in his woodcuts.
