Archive Label 2003: Padua was known for the bronze metalwork that was produced there beginning in the Renaissance. There was growing scientific interest in the study of all species of animals, including crustaceans, during this time. Consequently, artists and craftsmen replicated animal forms-paying particular attention to biological accuracy, as with the tentacles and pincers on this crab. A man of learning likely commissioned this inkwell for his desk. Other examples of Italian bronzes can be seen in the Renaissance Gallery on the third floor of the museum.
