Lawrence, KS, January 9, 2013 – The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas and the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute are pleased to present the inaugural North American exhibition by the internationally renowned Xijing Men: artists Tsuyoshi Ozawa (Japan), Chen Shaoxiong (China), and Gimhongsok (Korea). Members of the collaborative will arrive in Kansas City on January 22 for a 10-day residency to create and install a new work.

Lawrence, KS, March 7, 2013 – Water is timeless… or is it? Conversation XIV: Water, an installation of modern and contemporary works from the Spencer’s permanent collection, explores artists’ perspectives on the elixir of life: H₂0. Many of the works assembled for this installation take an eco-critical approach to the subject matter, exploring pollution and scarcity, whereas others address water less literally and more symbolically, as a cleansing or destructive force.

Lawrence, KS, June 13, 2013 – Lavishly beaded gauntlets, or gloves, created by indigenous peoples of British Columbia and Alberta. Works painted by the contemporary artist recognized, in his native Senegal, as the “dean of reverse glass painting.” Beaded 19th-century moccasins displayed alongside fashionable Vans skateboarding shoes painted by 21st-century artist Chris Pappan. What do these objects have in common?
