Looking After: Art and Care in Education Across Kansas

In John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family journeys from Oklahoma to California, forced to move in search of work after losing their farm during the Dust Bowl. Thomas Hart Benton was commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox to make this work as a promotion for their movie adaptation of the book. With this artwork, we can think about how a story is transformed as it moves between text, still image, and film.
