Archive Label date unknown: This picture is from a series of still life subjects illustrating chapters of the eleventh-century novel The Tale of Genji. The three chapters represented here all describe incidents in the life of a young girl, Tamakazura, as she came of age. The love letter attached to the sheaf of grass is inscribed "Spring, Rabbit Year.
