Exhibition Label: "A Kansas Arts Sampler," Oct-2004, Kate Meyer Over 30,000 of Joseph Pennell’s glass-plate negatives from his commercial studio in Junction City are now in the collection of the Spencer Research Library. A much smaller portion of this archive was reprinted by Jon Blumb for the exhibition Frozen in Time: J.J. Pennell’s Junction City Photographs: 1895-1922 and are now in the permanent collection of the Spencer Museum of Art. Pennell’s photographs preserve the moments in which they were produced in constructed poses that suggest the attitude of society at that moment toward gender, class, wealth and race.
