Exhibition Label: "Time/Frame," Jun-2008, Robert Fucci, Shuyun Ho, Lauren Kernes, Lara Kuykendall, Ellen C. Raimond, and Stephanie Teasley Known affectionately by his students and associates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as, “Doc,” and dubbed “Papa Flash,” by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, Dr. Harold Eugene Edgerton’s research in the fields of stroboscopy and electronic flash photography have made visible a stunning range of phenomena that would ordinarily be imperceptible to the naked eye. In Swirls and Eddies Edgerton employs high-speed multiple-flash photography to create a series of successive photographs which, when combined into one image, serve to capture the entire free-flowing record of a smashing squash stroke. Squash is a British game similar to racquetball.
