Archive Label date unknown: A crown decorated with iris was worn during the fifth month to protect the wearer from illness and misfortune, and to drive away evil spirits. According to the Zen nihongi, the practice was established as early as 747 when the Emperor Shōmu forbade anyone not wearing such a crown during the fifth month to enter the court. This print of a geisha in summer was published by an Ōsaka group of poets.
