This is the center panel of a polyptych illustrating the opening scene from the kabuki play Sukeroku. The fighting cocks on Shiratama's robe symbolize a confrontation between Sukeroku, the dashing hero of the play, and hi srival Ikkyū. Other panels depict other characters in the scene, which occurs beneath blossoming cherry trees at the entrance to a house in the Yoshiwara.
