He has cut off the wife’s hair in order to save their marriage. With unattractive, short hair the wife’s father could not force his daughter to divorce Gihei and marry a wealthy man. Yuranosuke’s fellow ronin (master-less samurai) stand behind him and the crates that were meant to hold weapons for the attack.
