Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard Citizen was made while Lewis was a visiting artist at the University of Kansas in 1999. While photographing the Leavenworth penitentiary (where many consider some of the inmates to be political prisoners), a voice boomed over the P.A. system, “Citizen, cease taking pictures.” The image used here was taken from the rear window of a car as Lewis and friends sped away. Rather than a series of images, Citizen resolves as one enormous image peppered with symbols that appear elsewhere in his work.
