Exhibition Label: Installation related to "Tokyo: The Imperial Capital Woodblock prints by Koizumi Kishio, 1928-1940," Feb-2005, Hillary Pedersen Since the early Edo period (1600-1868), the Ryōgoku bridge area has been one of the capital’s flourishing entertainment districts. The bridge crosses the Sumida River, and joins two riverbanks that are lined with tea shops, merchant stands, and various entertainment establishments. In this print, revelers in a teahouse dance, sing, and play sugoroku, a Japanese form of backgammon. This is an early composition showing linear perspective, seen in the converging architectural lines and diminishing scale of the figures as they recess into the background. Early prints like this one were produced with printed outlines and hand coloring, while later prints used a separate woodblock to print each color onto the paper.
