Archive Label date unknown: The sticks the boys carry are actually paddles which were used to stir kayu, a rice gruel which was ceremonially prepared and eaten on the fifteenth day of the first month of the year. It was popularly believed that if a childless woman were struck with one of these paddles, she would have a healthy male child. In Eisen's picture, the boys are chasing a young unmarried woman, causing her some embarrassment.
