Exhibition Label: "American Indian Art at the Spencer Museum," 6-Sep-2003 to 19-Oct-2003, Andrea Norris Raised in a Yaqui community that was engulfed by Scottsdale, Arizona, Martinez grew up in 20th-century Mexican, Anglo, and Yaqui cultures; he now lives in San Francisco. The overlaid photographs of this print evoke the subject of family heritage. Exhibition Label: "Time/Frame," Jun-2008, Robert Fucci, Shuyun Ho, Lauren Kernes, Lara Kuykendall, Ellen C. Raimond, and Stephanie Teasley Mario Martinez is a Yaqui Indian from Penjamo, the smallest of six Yaqui settlements in Arizona. In this color lithograph, Martinez layers transparent images of several generations of Yaqui people. Each generation visually overlaps and affects the next image similarly to the actual transfer of cultural heritage over time.
